Alaska

O estado do Alasca pertencia ao Império Russo até março de 1867, quando o Senado Americano aprovou sua compra por 7,2 milhões de dólares, o que correspondia a 2 centavos por acre. O território passou por muitas mudanças administrativas até tornar-se oficialmente o maior estado americano em janeiro de 1959. O nome Alasca já vinha do tempo imperial russo e significa "a grande terra". Juneau é a capital do estado e a extração de petróleo é atualmente a sua principal fonte de renda. Muitos aspectos da cultura russa ainda se fazem presentes, como a tradição dos ovos finamente decorados.

The U.S. Senate approved the purchase of Alaska from the Russian Empire on March 30, 1867, for $7.2 million at about two cents per acre. The land went through several administrative changes before becoming an organized territory on May 11, 1912, and the 49th state of the U.S. on January 3, 1959. The name "Alaska" (Аляска) was already introduced in the Russian colonial time, when it was used only for the peninsula and is derived from the Aleut alaxsxaq, meaning "the mainland". It is also known as Alyeska, the "great land", an Aleut word derived from the same root.
